MINSTER FM held its Local Hero Awards at a ceremony at York Racecourse.
The overall winner from the 12 categories was Mary Chapman, from Great Ouseburn, who won the charity fundraiser award for her work helping unwanted and rescued animals through her charity Nuzzlets.
The Bravery Award went to James Clearey, from Malton, who waded into flood water to rescue a woman who was trapped in her car.
Nina Aldrich, who developed multiple sclerosis months after witnessing the 2004 tsunami during a holiday in Phuket, said she did not have the energy to wade through the waist-deep water on a road near Huttons Ambo. She said James was her hero.
Six-year-old Noah Banks, from Selby, who was born prematurely and was later diagnosed with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy, picked up the child of achievement award.
Adam Dawson, of Tadcaster Grammar School, won the teacher of the year Award. Adam produced the internet hit Tadgram Style, a parody of the number one song Gangam Style.
