ALTHOUGH Archbishop Sentamu says he will miss Pope Benedict, (Pope Benedict XVI will be missed, The Press, February 11), I think many others will be glad to see the back of him.
Before becoming Pope, Ratzinger was in charge of The Congregation of the Doctrine of Faith, which oversaw every single accusation of child abuse in the Catholic Church.
It covered them up, refused to cooperate with the secular authorities (unless forced to), and since then has done all it can to limit the amount of compensation it pays to the victims.
Since becoming Pope he has compared gays to the destruction of the rain forest – both will apparently destroy mankind.
His 2010 visit provoked the largest ever protest march against a papal visit in Britain and his 2012 Christmas message compared being gay as a “manipulation of nature”.
If these are the actions and pronouncements that Archbishop Sentamu wishes us to celebrate, he will be sadly disappointed.
