MAJOR changes are planned for a pub near York following a catalogue of complaints about trouble at the venue.
Action is now being taken after numerous calls about The Swan in Low Street, Sherburn-in-Elmet, were made to North Yorkshire Police, which then made an application to revoke the pub’s licence.
Selby District Council’s licensing committee, which met to discuss issues surrounding the venue, has now imposed a number of conditions on it including the removal of outdoor seating at the front of the premises, a requirement for door staff to be on duty after 11pm at weekends and the installation of a CCTV system.
The pub will remain closed for several weeks while a suitable tenant is found.
Tim Grogan, senior enforcement officer for the council, said after the meeting: “The decision to impose stricter conditions upon The Swan is commendable and clearly demonstrates the power the council can exercise when managers of pubs allow their customers to misbehave to make life increasingly unpleasant and alarming for patrons, residents and the police.”
Police raised concerns about the venue following incidents including numerous reports of underage drinkers, antisocial behaviour, assaults and after-hours operation.
The incidents culminated in an underage drinker reportedly attacking another customer with a glass.
Inspector Richard Abbott, of Selby Police, said: “I am very pleased to see this result.
“It is satisfying to see the owners work with the police and licensing authority to bring about a safer and more pleasant location in which villagers can spend time.
“Hopefully, the new tenant will continue this good work and will welcome the local policing team as an ally.”
An Enterprise Inns spokeswoman said: “We can confirm The Swan has closed following the departure of the former publicans.
“It is our aim for the site to resume trading as soon as possible, and we are working very closely with the local authorities to enable The Swan to move forward as a great community local for the residents of Sherburn-in-Elmet.”
