The parents of a soldier who was shot dead in Afghanistan last year said their family was “in pieces” after their daughter died when her car veered into a tree in East Yorkshire.
Jennie Stone, 28, of Bridlington, crashed on her way home from dropping her nine-year-old son Charlie at school.
Ms Stone was overtaking a lorry when she collided with another car and was pronounced dead at the scene on the A165 in Fraisthorpe on Monday, Humberside Police said.
Her brother, Private Gregg Stone, aged 20, was shot dead during an operation to rescue a policeman kidnapped by insurgents in June.
Distraught parents Angie and Bob Stone, who live near Hornsea, said the second tragedy in less than a year has “broken” the family.
Ms Stone, who was due to graduate from the University of Hull in September with a degree in social work, was alone in the Peugeot when the crash took place.
A Humberside Police spokesman said: “A silver-coloured Vauxhall Astra car, driven by a 20-year-old woman, was travelling in the same direction.
“The two cars were apparently performing an overtake of a blue and white Daf rigid truck, also travelling north, when the two cars were in collision. The Peugeot then collided with a tree at the nearside of the carriageway.
"Fire, ambulance and police all attended and Jennie Stone was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Investigations into the cause of the collision are now under way and witnesses are being sought.”
