New Earswick were the only team to go through the Yorkshire Double Rinks competition unbeaten but they missed out on a final place.

A 22-22 draw against Selby, who finished third, meant New Earswick lost out to Scarborough, who they had beaten 21-19 in the first game.

In that opener, Brian Gray’s team won 12-5 and Barry Johnson’s just lost 14-9 after being 9-2 down at one stage.

The second game also saw a four points to two victory, this time against Thornaby with Ralph Tiplady’s team winning 17-11 and Johnson’s taking the last three ends to only go down 13-10.

The final group game was against Selby who had previously beaten Thornaby 31-27, but disappointingly lost 30-19 to Scarborough, losing both rinks in their second game.

Johnson’s team went from 10-9 to lead 15-9 going into their last end where they dropped a two to Tony Longfield’s side.

Tiplady’s team trailed 11-3 with two ends to play but won them both to only lose 11-7 which gave New Earswick a draw.

But it wasn’t enough as Scarborough edged a winning rink on their last end.

Section ‘B’ favourites Featherstone were shocked when they lost both rinks in their second game against North Cave, but managed to go through to the Final when Cave could only win one rink against bottom club Leeds in their last game.

Featherstone beat Ryedale 6-0 on points to go through with a better shots difference.

The final saw Scarborough’s Steve Taylor come from 7-5 down to beat John Whiteley’s team 11-7, though the West Yorkshire side took the title when Mark Hughes’s side beat that of Bob Dickens 18-9.
