YOU know that Fleetwood Mac song you love? Chances are it’s on Rumours. No single album deserves the consistent quality of Rumours, with Go Your Own Way, Don’t Stop, and Dreams just three of 11 excellent tracks.
Thirty five years on from release, it’s easy to think of it as a sort of Greatest Hits album, with many songs familiar from years of covers, but the original piano-heavy version of Songbird, with Christine McVie’s fragile vocals, is more memorable than Eva Cassidy’s guitar version, although The Chain’s closing minutes will forever be linked with Formula 1 television coverage. However, the heartbreak and vicious fighting taking place between the band is so clear in the lyrics (particularly You Make Loving Fun and Go Your Own Way), that it’s practically the concept album devoted to love/hate relationships.
Various anniversary versions are available, with studio out-takes and DVD, but the original disc is still worth the price on its own.
