A MILESTONE has been reached this week in the restoration of the world-famous Mallard’s sister locomotive, the Dominion of Canada.
No 60010 has been undergoing a cosmetic “Mallard-style” make-over and the first coat of characteristic garter blue has been applied to its cab, replacing the shabby BR green livery it has carried since the 1960s.
The work which has been supported by The Friends of the National Railway Museum, is under way at the National Railway Museum (NRM) site at Shildon, County Durham, in preparation for the historic reunion of Mallard and its sister engines in York later this year. The event is to mark the 75th anniversary of the Mallard reaching the record-breaking speed of 126mph.
The locomotives will be stationed at the NRM in York from July 3 to 17, when they will be displayed at the Great Hall turntable.
