I AM delighted that The Press has highlighted the controversy over the proposed housing development at Germany Beck in Fulford.
Evidence suggests that the decisive 1066 Battle of Fulford took place on the Germany Beck site. English Heritage has admitted that the land is the “most likely candidate” for the battle location and is reviewing its decision on whether to add the site to their ‘Register of Historical Battlefields’. Acceptance on this list would finally be recognition of the land’s proper historical importance.
Building such a development at Germany Beck would destroy this landscape and a vital piece of our local and national history would be lost forever.
Residents in Fulford have many other concerns about the site, and I have worked closely with them, alongside Fulford Parish Council and Edward McMillan-Scott MEP, to highlight the issues and will continue to do so.
We cannot trample on our past to push on with a development that, for so many reasons including access, flooding and traffic, is completely unsuitable for the area.
