MILLIONS of people across the UK will be shown an image of Clifford’s Tower in York today to mark an anniversary involving the infamous Dick Turpin.
Microsoft’s search engine, Bing UK, is featuring a picture of the monument, basking in sunshine, which will be made visible to 12.7 million people across the UK as they complete their daily search tasks.
The image was chosen to mark the anniversary of the unmasking of infamous highway robber Dick Turpin, aka Robert Palmer, which took place there on February 23, 1739.
A spokesman for the company said: “Bing is always on the lookout for inventive and interesting regional images to feature on the homepage, with the aim to encourage Britons to get out and do more – and see more of the country we live in.”
The homepage will also contain links which provide information about the ruined medieval keep, which is almost all that is left of York Castle, originally built by William the Conqueror, and will include a link to its location on Bing Maps, and a gallery of further images of the structure.
During its history, the tower has been a prison and a royal mint, and was also where Henry VIII had the bodies of his enemies put on public display.
