BUILDINGS in York including the multimillion-pound new headquarters for City Of York Council have been shortlisted for a string of design awards.

West Offices is the only development in Yorkshire to have been shortlisted in three categories of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors Pro-Yorkshire 2013 awards.

The council’s new home has been shortlisted in the categories for commercial, design and innovation and for building conservation.

Elsewhere in York, Nestlé’s product technology centre is shortlisted in the commercial and the design and innovation categories, while York Sports Village has made the final cut for the tourism and leisure award and University of York’s Langwith College is up for the residential accolade.

Chris Hale, of developers S Harrison, which was behind the West Offices scheme, said: “This is a tremendous result for what is a thoroughly impressive project.

“The West Offices development was delivered within budget, on time and has won acclaim from conservation and heritage groups for the sensitive way in which the historic structure was preserved.

"At the same time, it provides the council with a landmark building which is sustainable and offers modern, efficient workspace from which to deliver services.”

Tracey Carter, the council’s assistant director of finance, asset management and procurement, said: “Most of the major participants in the delivery were York or Yorkshire- based, reflecting the skill levels right here in the city to deliver complex and challenging projects.”

The move to West Offices should help the council save £17 million over the next 25 years.

The award winners will be announced at a ceremony in Leeds in April.

The council is currently in the process of moving into the new headquarters.

In total, it is reducing its number of buildings from 17 to two.
