IMAGES of how a £12 million student flats scheme in the centre of York will look have been draped on the side of the development.
The project in Carmelite Street, next to the Hungate development site, will see 258 rooms provided for York St John University students who will move into their new accommodation in October.
A giant banner has been hung from the scaffolding as the new building takes shape, with the structure for six of its eight floors now in place.
A group of students have been given an update on how work is progressing by York-based developers S Harrison and main contractor, Miller Construction, who have previously worked on student accommodation projects for York St John in the Walmgate area, as well as a Hampton by Hilton Hotel in Toft Green and the transformation of former railway station West Offices into City of York Council’s new £32 million headquarters.
Professor David Fleming, York St John’s vice chancellor, said: “Demand to study at York St John University is continuing to rise, and the latest student residential development is part of the investment programme to ensure future students enjoy the very best experience by choosing our university.”
The Carmelite Street flats will be car-free and S Harrison said the scheme will help to free family housing in the city. Up to 60 workers are currently on the site at a time, rising to 100 once the building’s structure is completed and internal work begins.
