SPORTING legend Steve Cram dropped in to talk to business students at a York university.

York St John University welcomed the former runner to the city-centre campus when he visited as part of his role as an ambassador for Yorkshire Bank.

He met with students and staff from York St John business school and the university’s faculty of health and life science to discuss how sport relates to business, the Olympic reaction and success of sport.

During the 1980s, Steve was one of the world’s dominant middle distance runners, setting world records in the 1,500 metres and the mile, as well as being the first man to run 1,500 metres under three minutes and 30 seconds.

Through its faculties, York St John has developed many partnerships with practitioners, business and representative bodies both within York and the wider region.

Jackie Mathers, Dean of York St John business school, said: “As the BBC’s chief athletics commentator, Steve had a real insight into the 2012 Olympics and we are thrilled that he has found time to share his experiences and knowledge with us. Meeting Steve really inspired the students and encouraged them to think more about the impact of the Olympics, especially how it relates to business.

“Being able to share their thoughts and ideas with Steve was a fantastic opportunity they all enjoyed.”

The visit was the second time in two weeks that the university played host to a sporting hero. Last week, as previously reported, premiership and international football referee, Howard Webb delivered a free public lecture called Leading the Field.

York St John recognised the referee’s contribution to sport in 2011 by awarding him an honorary degree.
