DAN Bean’s article (The Press, February 15) about Dorothy Bennett-Pitkin, who died on February 1, has prompted comments, discussion and reflection among old friends and neighbours.

For several years Dot was York Housing Association’s deputy warden at Margaret Philipson Court, a post she was ideal for with her tact, diplomacy and sense of humour.

On retirement she set a great example to others in embracing the freedom by pursuing a wide variety of hobbies and interests. As mentioned, Dot was keenly involved in local amateur dramatics. She was also a long-standing member of the congregation of All Saints Church, Pavement, was a keen rambler with ‘The Hobos’ until well into her 80s and travelled to High Hutton, Malton for her weekly art class.

At home, when not entertaining family and friends, Dot would often relax practising her art, dramatics and reading (usually Dickens or a detective mystery) while listening to Classic FM or Terry Wogan.

I am indebted to Dot not only for her friendship but also for her numerous acts of kindness.

As spring approaches I shall miss her battle cry of “Come on kidda, this year we’ll crack it”, as we would attempt to cultivate the pots and window boxes on our shared, north-facing balcony.

We never did manage it, but I shall keep trying with this wonderful lady in mind.

Tony Eves, Margaret Philipson Court, York.
