AN ancient well unearthed in a York hotel garden is posing something of a quandary.
The owners of York’s Mount Royale Hotel are searching for an expert who can tell them more about it after the well was rediscovered during winter maintenance work.
Hotel director Stuart Oxtoby said: “The well has been there for a long time and this winter’s work programme reminded me of its original discovery.”
The well was uncovered originally by York Archaeological Trust who excavated the site 30 years ago when the hotel’s swimming pool was constructed, but Mr Oxtoby said the hotel management was unsure of its origins and depth. He is now looking for an expert who might be prepared to go down to try and discover more about it.
Mr Oxtoby said: “There is evidence on record of a number of scattered burial sites in this area and we could be located on one such site. It would be interesting to know the significance of the well. The city’s heritage is the main reason for visitors coming to York which the hotel has supported throughout its own history.
“Hopefully someone will come forward with an interest and help us to understand more about it. My late father would sometimes threaten to throw me into the well when he was displeased with me!”
The hotel was founded by the Oxtoby family in 1967 and was formerly two private houses built during the reign of William IV (1830 – 1837).
