THE secrets of York Minster’s underground chambers are part of a new exhibition planned for this summer, writes Sean Heggarty.
The transformation of the Minster’s undercroft is part of the York Minster Revealed project.
When complete, the work will feature new audiovisual and interactive galleries revealing the significance behind the cathedral’s most treasured artefacts, which will go on display to the public from May 25.
Multi-media galleries, new displays of historic collections and interactive interpretation will also be on view to visitors.
At the same time, improved access to the South Transept, undercroft, treasury and crypt will transform the experience of visiting the Minster.
The Dean of York, the Very Rev Vivienne Faull, said: “This marks a very exciting time for York Minster and we are delighted to be working with City of York Council, putting York on an international tourist map through high-quality investment and expanding learning opportunities for visitors and residents alike.”
Due for completion in 2016, York Minster Revealed is the largest restoration and conservation project of its kind in the UK and has been supported with £10.5m from the Heritage Lottery Fund, while the rest of the £20m needed has been raised by the Minster.
Coun Sonja Crisp, cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism, said: “This is an exciting time for residents and tourists, taking them on a journey of York Minster’s past, present and future.”
