A WOMAN is critically ill in hospital and a man has been arrested following an incident at a flat in York.
The ambulance service was called to a the ground floor of the house on Burdyke Avenue in Clifton on Monday to help the 63-year-old woman who had collapsed. She was taken to York Hospital where she remains.
A 45-year-old man was arrested in connection with the incident and has since been bailed while investigations continue, a spokesman for North Yorkshire Police said.
Police, who arrived at the scene on Monday afternoon, are understood to have guarded the property through the night.
The nature of the woman’s condition is not known.
A neighbour, who asked not to be named, said he understood a man and woman were living at the property which had been occupied for three or four months, however police said the arrested man lives elsewhere in York.
He said police had arrived at the flat at about 5.30pm on Monday and had stayed throughout the night, with officers guarding the front and back of the property.
He said: “The police were one at the back and one at the front - obviously nobody has been in there.”
He said a disturbance had been heard at the house on Saturday evening.
A police spokesman said: “Police inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“A 45-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the investigation. He has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.”
