ROSE by name, rose by nature, Caitlin is a new breed of Nashville country singer who is fragrant, of course, but watch out for the prick of her thorns.

Her 2010 debut album, Own Side Now, alerted the country cognoscenti to her emotionally frank sentiments and ear for a classic melody, and as for that sweet, wry yet vulnerable voice, only Eilen Jewell so tantalises.

Those qualities are in full bud once more, although the arrangements are more expansive, more expensive, or in Rose’s words, she has a “tendency to work small, so this album is like my first attempt at a high kick”.

High kick it does, whether it is the two collaborations with The Jayhawks’ Gary Louris, Only A Clown and Silver Sings, or the pedal steel of Pink Champagne; the Fifties’ retro glow of Golden Boy; or the ragtime finale, Old Numbers. The Stand-In stands out.
