EARLY-MORNING patrols are to be carried out in East Yorkshire to tackle its dog fouling problem.
Parts of the region have been plagued by dog dirt and East Riding of Yorkshire Council has launched a campaign to deal with the issue after saying owners are still ignoring pleas to clean up after their pets.
As part of Dog Fouling Week, which runs from March 11, dog wardens backed up by enforcement teams will be patrolling areas in Beverley, Bridlington, Goole and other towns.
Fines of £75 will be handed out to offenders and failure to pay could mean an appearance in court.
Coun Jackie Cracknell, of community partnerships, said: “Dog Fouling Week is not about springing surprises on dog-walkers, it is about promoting responsible dog-ownership so all residents and visitors can enjoy the beauty of East Yorkshire without having to mind where they are treading.”
The council has received 509 complaints about dog-fouling in the last year, compared with 429 in 2011 and 386 in 2010.
The patrols will also look out for dogs which are not kept under control or are being walked in areas where dogs are prohibited.
