EAST Yorkshire council chiefs have drawn up a draft five-year plan to tackle the county’s growing homelessness problem.
The number of households accepted as homeless by the authority has increased from 337 in 2009 to 463 in 2011, though there was a slight fall last year.
The council has identified three priorities to tackle the situation.
The first is to prevent households from becoming homeless through effective partnership working, identifying vulnerable individuals at an early stage and addressing their problems before they reach crisis point.
The second priority is to ensure that there are ways for people that are homeless to get back into housing.
The third priority outcome is to put in place “safety-net” services and support for those in crisis.
Comments on the draft strategy are invited up to March 15. It can be viewed at eastriding.gov.uk/say
