THE memory of a North Yorkshire woman will live on in the church she loved, thanks to a specially-designed new window.

The Trinity Window, which has been designed and created by artist Helen Whittaker from Dunnington’s Barley Studio, has been installed at Holy Trinity Church this week, just in time for Easter.

The images, which represent God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, are depicted in semi-circles which form three interlinked circles, another symbol of the Trinity, and all appear to be reaching towards Heaven.

The Rev Nick Bird, rector of the church, called the window “a glorious addition to our church”, and said there was a solemn reason behind the excitement of having a new piece of art at the church.

Mr Bird said: “The window is in memory of Marion Cooper, a resident of the village and a member of the church choir, who died in 2010.

“It will be a delightful and inspiring addition to Holy Trinity Church, and a fitting memorial for a faithful member of the church.”

Helen said of her design: “The theme of the window is the Holy Trinity, which is represented by a trio of ancient and familiar Christian symbols.

“There are protecting hands ready to cradle and bless, symbolising God the Father, a Damascus Barbel fish from the Sea of Galilee representing God the Son, and a dove spreading its wings across the apex of the window for the Holy Spirit.”

Phil Thomas, church buildings officer for the Diocese of York, said: “Helen’s design is fresh and bold, and will look wonderful in the Chancel at Holy Trinity Church. This new window is a really significant addition to a church which already contains some distinguished stained glass.”
