I WAS pleased to read two recent stories in The Press calling for further construction in the York region (“Manufacturers in roads investment call to Ministers”, April 2, and “Wind farm could provide £23 million boost”, April 3).
According to figures from the Construction Skills Network report, the Yorkshire and the Humber’s construction industry will see a decline in output of 0.9 per cent per year between now and 2017; the second-worst outlook in the country.
Therefore it is vital that we continue to push for new construction projects to help return the UK economy to growth.
While the Chancellor’s recent Budget announcement was welcome news to the construction industry, we and partners in our Construction4Growth campaign believe that more must be done.
More short to medium-term investment in repair and maintenance of housing, roads and rail would reinvigorate the industry. This is the best way to job creation – returning 3,200 jobs for every £100 million spent.
We at CITB hope that construction companies across the region will get behind the C4G campaign and help us to make the industry the strongest it can be.
Steve Housden, Sector strategy manager for CITB in Yorkshire & the Humber.
