Many girls have, at some point in their lives, dreamed of getting married in a fairytale castle.
Well, dreams can come true at the magnificent Allerton Castle, located in a hidden corner of North Yorkshire between York, Harrogate and Leeds, and this historic building proved to be a magnificent setting for our spring Yorkshire Living Brides photo shoot.
Steeped in English history, Allerton Castle is one of the most important and elegant Gothic Revival stately homes in England and built to impress. Brides can make a grand entrance down the impressive cantilevered staircase to the oak-panelled great hall where family, friends and the man of her dreams are all waiting under the 70- foot-high oak-hammer beamed ceiling.
After saying “I do” the marriage register can be signed in the elegant drawing room beneath a nine-foot high Venetian chandelier which was a gift to Baron Stourton from the King of Naples more than 150 years ago. Champagne and canapés can be served in the memorial garden, designed to commemorate the No. 6 Group, Royal Canadian Air Force who were stationed at Allerton Castle during the Second World War.
After a game of croquet on the upper terrace, the wedding breakfast is served in the gothic ballroom with its white decorative vaulted ceiling and deep blue walls. Over the years, Allerton Castle has had a variety of owners including Lords, Viscounts and even Prince Frederick, the Grand Old Duke of York, and was the setting for many elegant parties and celebrations. Now you too can have exclusive hire of Allerton Castle for your wedding, private function or event.
Allerton Castle is maintained by The Gerald Arthur Rolph Foundation for Historic Preservation and Education – a charitable trust and foundation established in 1986 to preserve Allerton Castle, a Grade 1 Listed building, as part of English and World Heritage.
The restoration works started at that time, but had to be restarted in January 2005 after a devastating fire completely destroyed one third of the castle.
The work to reinstate all of these rooms, including furnishings and ornamentation, has now been completed and guided tours are available to anyone wishing to visit.
