For me, the London Marathon was a once in a lifetime experience. I’ll never forget the cheers of the crowds as I came into The Mall and eventually crossed the finishing line in a time of 3 hrs 45 minutes.
Not bad, but this wasn’t on Sunday. It was 30 odd years ago and I swore then never to do a marathon again.
It was too far, too gruelling and required a training regime that simply took up far too much time. But it gave me a taste for running, although at much shorter distances, which has never left me. It’s been a bit on and off and very much off in the last few years.
So, why on earth have I entered the Yorkshire Plusnet Yorkshire Marathon? Well, I was looking for a challenge and whilst I definitely wasn’t looking for a marathon, it was on my doorstep so why not?
Also, in my head it didn’t appear too daunting. After all, I like running. I’ve completed several half marathons and numerous 10ks and when I entered I had 40 weeks to prepare.
However, it’s already proving tough. Due to a series of setbacks, including a virus, I’m back to square one doing only a bit of light jogging and stretching and there’s now only 26 weeks to go.
So, to help me on my way I’ve signed up at York Sport Village to try to build up my strength and endurance in the gym and the pool. I’ve had my first session and I’m raring to go and hoping I make it to the start line on October 20.
