IDEAS will be shared at a market run by a York artist at the city’s new council headquarters next month.

The first interactive public arts event at City of York Council’s West Offices will see John Newling, emeritus professor of installation sculpture at Nottingham Trent University, stage a public talk. Fine arts students from York St John University will also attend in a pilot project designed to set the scene for future events.

Nine market stalls will run between 10am and 4pm on May 2 and 3 at the approach to West Offices’ customer-centre entrance off Toft Green.

The market and talk, between 11.45am and 1pm on May 2, are funded by the HQ’s developers, S Harrison and Buccleuch, and organised by Yorkshire creative company Beam.

Coun Sonja Crisp, the council’s cabinet member for leisure, culture and tourism, said: “As the council’s new centre at West Offices has given a new lease of life to a historic building now embellished with public art, we want to create a lasting legacy for artists and citizens.”

Professor Newling said: “The market is an attempt to make transactions between people and emerging artists from York and is an opportunity for creative individuals to talk about their work and ideas and for visitors to experience, contribute to and hear ideas from a largely hidden creative community.”
