WHAT a difference a month makes!
An army of volunteers have completed a massive makeover of empty rooms below a York church to create a stunning new youth centre.
St Michael le Belfrey Church and Central Methodist Church joined forces to refurbish the basement of the latter’s building in St Saviourgate, supported by fundraising efforts.
The newly created space will be called Basement Central and will cater for young people across York.
Lee Kirkby, head of youth and children’s work at St Michael le Belfrey, thanked the volunteers and local companies that backed the work.
He said: “It has been a huge effort from lots of individuals and groups - including Advanced Waste Management, Dreams, Ian Middleton and Mick Davies, contractors, and everyone at Central Methodist Church.
“We can’t wait to see it open on Tuesday, May 7. This isn’t just a Belfrey project but a city-wide initiative.
“The congregation at St Michael le Belfrey have been so generous. More than £12,000 has been donated, which is incredible.
“I am hoping to see a great relationship form in the coming years with the Belfrey and Central Methodist Church.
“It’s an exciting time to be a young person in York.”
