A CONFERENCE will be staged in York next month to discuss looming problems for householders and businesses in obtaining flood insurance.
City of York Council is hosting the conference on Friday, May 10, at West Offices to discuss with city-wide partners, the Federation of Small Businesses, MPs and insurance experts how people can secure appropriate and affordable insurance.
An agreement between the Government and insurers, under which people at risk of flooding can continue to get cover, is due to expire in June.
The council says it wants to explore how major insurance companies, supported by the Government, can help people who could face difficulties renewing or affording insurance beyond this date.
Key speakers will include York council leader James Alexander, Mary Creagh MP, Shadow Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs who will bring a national perspective on the issue and Graham Stewart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, who has petitioned the Government to reach an affordable agreement with the Association of British Insurers (ABI).
Also speaking will be John Allan, National Chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, Matt Cullen, the ABI’s policy adviser on flooding and Paul Cobbing, Chief Executive of the National Flood Forum.
