A TEAM of cancer researchers will be at Tesco Askham Bar on Saturday encouraging men to sign up for York’s annual men-only fun run, RU Taking The P?
The race, held on Fathers Day each year, raises money for the Yorkshire Cancer Research Unit at the University of York and its groundbreaking research into prostate cancer.
Race organiser Brian Hughes says every penny raised will go to support the work of Prof Norman Maitland and his team.
Members of the team will be outside Tesco between 11am and 5pm to explain their work. Mr Hughes, a hairdresser and former York Press Community Pride Charity Fundraiser of the Year, launched RU Taking The P? three years ago. He has a friend who has died of prostate cancer.
So far, the races have raised more than £38,000. You don’t have to run the 5k route, which starts and finishes at Rowntree Park, Brian said. “A lot of people walk. I’ve had guys doing it in fancy dress – and even one guy with prostate cancer who walked it with stitches in last year.”
To enter this year’s race, on June 16, pick up an entry form outside Tesco on Saturday or from Brian’s Hair Fashions in South Bank Avenue, or log on to yorkshirecancerresearch.org.uk
