The second series of 'Mr Selfridge' has gone into production.

Jeremy Piven - who plays the titular star - has started filming 10 new episodes of the popular ITV period drama series alongside newcomers Aidan McArdle, Cal Macaninch and Polly Walker, who will take on the role of Bohemian novelist and business woman Delphine Day.

Delphine becomes friends with Rose Selfridge - who is portrayed by Frances O'Connor - in the first episode and starts to empower her, leaving her husband, the titular department store owner, feeling beleaguered and sidelined.

But he is not the only character left surprised during the opening to the new series, as Katherine Kelly's alter-ego Lady Mae Loxley is stunned when her husband - who is played by newcomer Aidan - unexpectedly returns to London.

However, his reappearance creates tensions for Lady Mae and drives a wedge between her and Harry Selfridge.

Former 'Downton Abbey' star Cal will make his debut in 'Mr Selfridge' as flamboyant new Head of Fashion, Mr Thackeray, who is due to cause chaos in the store and considers himself a cut above the other staff, particularly Agnes Towler, who is played by 'The Borrowers' beauty Aisling Loftus.

'Mr Selfridge' returns to ITV next year to coincide with the centenary of the First World War.
