A CHARITY set up in memory of a little boy from York who lost his brave battle against a brain tumour has donated £1,000 to a North Yorkshire children’s hospice.
The donation has been made by the Smiley Riley Fund UK to Martin House Hospice at Boston Spa, which cares for youngsters with life-limiting illnesses and provides support to their families.
Smiley Riley was formed last year by the family of Riley Plant, Burnholme, who died last September aged just 21 months after being diagnosed with a rare and incurable brain tumour.
Simone Potter, the fund’s founder and Riley’s grandmother, said: “After Riley died, it was the request of his parents Gavin and Lindsay that twice a year we donate a chosen amount to Martin House.
“Once Riley’s condition was terminal, he came under their care, and even though he never went in, he was overseen by their doctors and community nurses as we cared for him at home.”
The Smiley Riley Fund UK will host a Run and Fun Day at Mille Crux playing fields, off Haxby Road, tomorrow.
Eric Banner, who runs Banner Fisheries in New Earswick, is supporting the event by opening between noon and 5pm tomorrow to sell fish and chips at £5, with all proceeds going to Smiley Riley. He said: "I've wanted to do something like this for some time but never had the opportunity until now. It is such a good cause."
Entry to the event, starting at midday, is £3 per child and free for parents. To register, phone Jeanette Ashes-Husband on 07973 358186 or Simone Potter on 07818 506476 or sign up tomorrow, with more information at thesmileyrileyfund.co.uk
