A police officer from Nottinghamshire has died after he crashed into a tree while out cycling with friends in North Yorkshire.
Detective Inspector Pete Parchment was cycling near Pateley Bridge in North Yorkshire when he hit the tree on Wednesday at around 10.40am.
The 49-year-old suffered serious injuries and, despite the efforts of his friends and paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
At this stage it appeared no one else or any other vehicles were involved, a force spokeswoman said.
The officer, who was wearing a cycle helmet at the time of the incident, had served with Nottinghamshire Police for nearly 24 years.
Chris Eyre, Nottinghamshire Police Chief Constable, said: “Pete Parchment was an exceptional police officer who served the public of Nottinghamshire for nearly 24 years.
“The thoughts of everyone at Nottinghamshire Police are with his family as they attempt to come to terms with this tragic news.”
His family has asked for privacy at this time.
