A YORK man has received a conditional discharge after he stole wine and food from a store following a drinking session.

York Magistrates’ Court heard Matthew Andrew Ledger, of Lindsey Avenue, went into Spar in Lowther Street, on February 10.

He was seen by staff picking up two bottles of wine, a bottle of cordial, and a pasty, together worth £23.22.

He then walked out without paying.

Lee-Anne Robins-Hicks, for Ledger, said the offence was out of character for the 22-year-old, who pleaded guilty to the charge.

She said he had been socialising with friends and drinking.

“There are occasions where he drinks to excess,” she said, but Ledger had been speaking to his GP following the incident.

The magistrates gave Ledger a 12-month conditional discharge and ordered him to pay £85 prosecution costs. He was also ordered to pay £23.22 compensation and a victim surcharge of £15.
