People of all ages living with dyslexia in York are to get a helping hand from two new support groups.

Caroline Barker, of Fishergate, whose young son, Joe, has mild dyslexia, was inspired to set up one of the groups after creating a specialist dyslexia education centre last year in York.

Caroline said she had been discussing the possibility of setting up the support group with some of her clients and the response had been “incredibly positive”.

She said: “I began receiving inquiries from a number of adults who were struggling at work or with everyday tasks, and wanted advice and support. Many have not been diagnosed with dyslexia, but struggle with reading and spelling as well as issues such as short term memory or visual processing.

“This may have knocked their confidence in what they do and they need some extra support to help them.”

The group will meet on the first Wednesday of every month, between 7.15pm and 9pm, in the Fulford Arms. The first meeting takes place tomorrow.

Meanwhile, a second group specifically for people aged between 18 and 25 is to be launched next week by the York and District Dyslexia Association (YADDA).

The York Dyslexia Club will meet twice a month to enable young people with the condition to meet, share knowledge and enjoy social outings.

Those behind the group also hope members will use their experiences to help produce a guide about dyslexia, looking at how to cope with the condition and what support is available.

YADDA chairman Lis Johnstone, said: “This is a unique project in York and will enable young people to participate in raising awareness about dyslexia, while producing informative material for the local community and have some fun at the same time.”

The group will meet on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month starting from Wednesday, May 8.

The first group will meet at the Riverside Farm pub, in Shipton Road, at Skelton. For more details, phone Lis on 07866 135 124 or email chair@yadda.org.uk
