A YORK woman and her brother will walk 500 miles across Spain to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research UK.
Jane Pratchett, 60, and her brother Carl Sheard, 54, will begin the Camino Trail in northern Spain on May 9 in memory of their mother, father and Jane’s mother-in-law who all died with dementia.
Thousands of people follow the ancient pilgrimage route each year, which leads to the resting place of St James the Apostle. Jane and Carl hope to complete the walk in five weeks.
They will start their journey on the French side of the Pyrenees and will trek across the top of Spain to their destination, Santiago de Compostela in the north-west of the country.
Jane said: “My parents and my mother-in-law are the inspiration for walking the Camino trail – I lost them all to dementia. My mother, Peggy, died only last year with Alzheimer’s disease and my mother-in-law, Betty, died the year before with vascular dementia.
“Back in 1997 my father, Philip, also passed away with vascular dementia. I want to do everything I can to help the experts, Alzheimer’s Research UK.”
