The Derwenthorpe Community Fund of Joseph Rowntree Foundation has provided funding for a series of free club activities and courses for over-55s.
Run by the Friends of St Nicholas Fields at the York Environment Centre, pictured, in Tang Hall, three different weekly clubs will start this month to provide opportunities for older people to share their skills, learn some new ones and socialise.
There will be easy access gardening on Mondays, and on Wednesdays, walking or sitting with wildlife or craft activities.
All the clubs will be suitable for able-bodied people and those with mobility or dexterity issues.
A transport fund is available to help those finding it difficult to reach St Nicholas Fields.
Pottery classes and harvest festival craft workshops are planned later in the year. A regular gardening volunteer at the Environment Centre said: “I live alone, so coming here is a social thing. I can come here and have all sorts of people to talk to.”
Ivana Jakubkova, events officer at St Nicholas Fields, said: “We are very happy to offer this new range of activities thanks to a grant from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. The nature reserve and Environment Centre offer a great meeting space and place to learn for people of all ages.”
