THE Archbishop of York has praised young people who have become the first to complete the senior Young Leaders Award developed by his Youth Trust.
Dr John Sentamu yesterday presented badges and certificates to 22 Year 11 students from Manor CE Academy.
The Archbishop said it was a privilege to see the youngsters undergoing an “incredible journey”, and putting what they learned into practice.
He said: “These young people are trailblazers in our society.
“Sometimes it is hard to be the first person to do something, but that leap of faith can inspire others to follow.”
The students completed a number of projects to develop skills, serve others and make a difference in the community, such as mentoring younger pupils, raising money for charities, leading workshops in primary schools, and working in hospices in Romania. Brian Crosby, Manor principal, said whatever the world held for the youngsters, he was confident the experiences gained through the award would help them to make a difference.
Student Rebecca Naish, 16, said the award helped her develop as a person and said: “Overall it has helped me to become a better listener and I have learned new ways of leading a team towards the best possible outcome”.
The award aims to equip young people to “be the change they want to see” in their schools and communities.
