THE so-called Godfather of Grime releases his ninth full-length album, with extra tracks on the deluxe edition.
Fans of Wiley’s style, a mix of Calvin Harris-like dance beats and London-accented rap, will be won over immediately, as opening track Ascent Intro tunes through a variety of mock radio stations before settling on a melancholy piano and Wiley rhyming about bagels and partying through the night, with auto-tuned electronic vocals adding a melody.
Anyone unsure about him may be convinced by the hit singles Can You Hear Me? (Ayayaya), and particularly the brilliant Heatwave. Still, these are just two tracks from 16, and although all are well produced and solid examples of the UK Grime scene, chances are you’ll either love it or you won’t.
Or you’ll be left thinking that surely, anyone who does throw their hands up in the air (when encouraged to do so for the thousandth time), by definition really must care more than those who don’t.
