COUNCIL leaders from Selby have wished the town’s rugby team well as they play the biggest match in the club’s history.

Selby RUFC will play Gloucester-based Drybrook at Twickenham today for the RFU Senior Vase, with at least five coachloads of supporters making the trip to London to cheer them on.

Council leader Mark Crane said: “I think it’s fantastic news for the town. Congratulations to the club and it’s players for this great achievement. I’m delighted delighted to learn that a large number of people from Selby are going to Twickenham to watch the team play and I wish them every success on the day for what should be a great day out for all involved.”

Councilor Steve Shaw-Wright: “It’s the biggest game in the team’s history really. It’s good for the club and exceptional for Selby to be represented at Twickenham.

“A couple of years back, one of the youth teams represented Selby at Twickenham and they won, so perhaps that could be an omen.

“With the promotion they have just got, it will be really good for them and for the town, so I wish them well.

“They do a lot for the town and they’ll definitely have civic support.”
