A NUMBER of “explainers” at the National Railway Museum could lost their jobs as part of a cost-cutting drive.
The museum says it is consulting staff about proposed changes. A spokeswoman said it currently had just over 21 full-time equivalent explainers within its learning team, who gave gallery talks and tours, and organised educational workshops for schools, science shows and a range of family events during school holidays.
She said learning was a significant expenditure and the museum needed to make cost savings and efficiencies, while also ensuring it continued to deliver a world-class learning offer that enabled visitors to enjoy engaging and memorable experiences.
“To do this, we are reviewing our staffing to focus our resources on activities that deliver this vision to our growth audiences of schools and families.”
Asked how many staff would be made redundant, she said: “We are currently consulting with staff and until this has been completed we’re unable to say.”
