LOCAL companies have been assured they will have every opportunity to play a part in the redevelopment of the former Terry’s chocolate factory.
York & North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce has been given a presentation by joint developers David Wilson Homes Yorkshire East and Henry Boot Developments about their plans for York’s landmark Chocolate Works.
The event also provided the opportunity for owners and managers from the region’s building industry to be updated on the proposals for the 27-acre site off Bishopthorpe Road, which was acquired by the two companies in April.
Ben Ward, senior development surveyor at Henry Boot, which will redevelop the listed factory buildings as part of a major commercial property scheme, said: “We are absolutely committed to fulfilling the potential of the Chocolate Works and in doing so sourcing services and labour locally where possible.
“This will help further boost the positive economic impact of the Chocolate Works development for the city as a whole.”
Paul Newman, managing director of David Wilson Homes Yorkshire East, which aims to build 300 homes, said: “Like every one of our developments in the region, it will provide opportunities for local labour and suppliers.
“We also employ 200 people directly in this region, many of whom will have a role in the Chocolate Works development.”
Chamber members were told the developers had already made significant progress and that David Wilson Homes was close to being able to submit a detailed planning application for phase one of the residential part of the site following a positive response at a recent Terry’s Community Forum meeting.
Chamber head Susie Cawood said she was delighted the redevelopment had finally begun, especially after the false starts experienced before the new owners bought the site.
“It’s excellent news for York and the region and we look forward to learning more about the opportunities that open up to Chamber members as the project unfolds,” she said.
