I WAS delighted to see in The Press of October 31, the amazing, recently discovered, picture of the Mounted Home Guard Unit from the Second World War.
This proves beyond doubt their existence during the war and operations at Stockton-on-the-Forest, as referenced in our local history book In Days Gone By (only eight copies remaining for sale at £7.99).
We believe, as you state, that they were mainly made up of members of the local hunt, but were commanded by Major Teulon of Hazlebush House, whose cavalry connections probably involved other officers based at Strensall in its operation, hence so many uniformed personnel in the picture.
Such a pity we didn’t have this picture for our book Steve Burton.
