GENEROUS Press readers have helped to sustain a York homeless centre well into next year.

In September, we teamed up with City of York Council to run the York Harvest appeal, collecting donations of food and clothes for Carecent.

Carecent, in St Saviourgate, provides breakfast and support for homeless and disadvantaged people six days a week, but relies heavily on harvest festival collections by schools and churches.

The York Harvest drive made it easier for people with no links to a church or school to donate and readers responded in huge numbers. Donations through the appeal, and those from other collections, have now been sorted, helping to replenish the Carecent store room.

Nicky Gladstone, project leader at Carecent, thanked everyone for their support. She said the donations would be a huge help for the coming year, but stressed that general donations had been hit by the economic crisis in recent years.

She said the stocks would be unlikely to last all the way until next autumn, meaning a fresh appeal in the summer may be needed.
