Albums of the year: Best album: Grant Hart, The Argument (Domino)
Would you Adam and Eve it? An album predicated on John Milton’s classic tale of sin and sobriety, Paradise Lost, and it was superb.
Widely contrasting in genre, blithely consistent in its excellence, this offering from Husker Du driving force Grant Hart was a tour de force.
True it was of a spiritual bent, but throughout it was always innovative and provocative, and ingrained with a rock-solid momentum.
Whether it was fusing punk, country, ballad, or even 1930s musicals, there was no disputing the class in the grooves provided by Hart. Inspirational and as the man said: “Sing, you heavenly muse.”
Best re-release: David Bowie, Aladdin Sane.
Best vocalist: Eddie Vedder for Pearl Jam on Lightning Bolt.
Best comeback: Paul McCartney, New.
Best anagram: Sonek Ace, otherwise Neko Case, The Worse Things Get…
