Best instrumental and recording of the year: Beethoven, 33 Variations On A Waltz Of Diabelli, Op 120, with Sonata No 32, Op 111 and Six Bagatelles, Op 126, Andras Schiff (fortepiano and piano) ( ECM New Series 4810446, 2 CDs).

Anyone privileged to hear Schiff play the monumental Diabelli Variations at the Harrogate International Festival will have keenly anticipated these recordings. They do not disappoint.

On the contrary, they open new vistas, thanks to the use of parallel versions using a Bechstein grand piano of 1921 (also for the sonata) and a Hammerflugel fortepiano of Beethoven’s own day (also for the bagatelles).

The versions come from different worlds, almost sounding like two different works. Schiff has thoroughly examined Beethoven’s thought-processes via the previously unknown manuscripts and is meticulous without being in the least laboured.

Truly a magnificent achievement from one of the keyboard geniuses of our time.
