STUDENTS at a York school are to have a make-over after calling for a smarter look.
Governors at Millthorpe School agreed to introduce a new uniform following an extensive consultation involving pupils, parent and staff.
The sole supplier will be York-based Rawcliffe’s and the new uniform, complete with a blazer and jumper instead of the current sweatshirt, will be introduced in September for all pupils except Year 11, who can keep their existing uniform in their final year.
Governors considered opinions from 316 parents, representing 48 per cent of parents of Years 7 to 10 pupils, and 707 pupils who took part in the survey. They also read several letters and emails from parents.
A third of parents said they did not want to change, while two-thirds felt the time was right for something smarter.
With Millthorpe recording its best GCSE results last year governors decided the change would help the school step up to the next level.
The request to have something smarter came from pupils through the school council.
Head teacher Trevor Burton, who supported the decision, said: “This is an initiative that came from the pupils and I made it clear it could only go to consultation if we were certain any new uniform would not cost any more than the present uniform.”
