AN ASPIRING designer has won a national competition for her customised onesie which is now to be manufactured and sold worldwide.
Georgina Ingledew’s design was winner in the Clothes Show Live Creative Awards staged in Birmingham.
The 17-year-old, from Escrick, has now been invited to help develop her one piece with a view to it going on sale across the world laster this year.
She said she stumbled across details of the competition while trying to buy tickets for the Clothes Show online.
The brief was to design a onesie for Norway-based OnePiece, the original designers of the all-in-one garment, after first researching the company and the latest trends.
She had only three days to put her ideas on paper in time for the first-round deadline.
Having won over judges, she was then sent a plain grey onesie to transform.
The Year 13 Fulford School student said: “I found that magenta, reds, golds and bronzes were very popular and brought an autumn leaf theme through which is how I ended up with a gradual colour change.
"There was also a trend of personalisation so I used studs in my design – on the OnePiece logo [on the back] and the pocket. I normally base my work on women’s wear, but it was a uni-sex product so it was very interesting to do.
“They said they had hundreds of entries across all the categories.”
She said her design was said to best fit the brief and portray the company’s style. Her prize is a two-night trip to Norway to meet the team at OnePiece and to develop her design for manufacture.
“It is going to be sold world-wide,” said Georgina. “I am overwhelmed. I can’t believe it.”
Georgina, whose inspiration comes from designers ranging from JW Anderson and Louise Gray to Alexander McQueen and Mary Quant, is currently studying A-levels including textiles, and hopes to get a fashion design place at Central St Martin University, in London.
“I know it is a very competitive industry,” she said. “I wanted to get my name out there.”
