Sleeve: Vintage black-and-white cover pic of the Rockney boys; extensive track listing on the back.
Sleevenotes: Gushing but genuine tribute from Phill Jupitus, along with collage of tickets and photos through the years.
Content: Two re-mastered albums totalling 20 tracks (1977’s Rockney and 1979’s Don’t Give A Monkeys), along with disc of 15 “odds and sods” – new and vintage live tracks and B-sides. Also, Live At Abbey Road from 1979 and DVD with live performance from Shepherd’s Bush Empire in 2005.
High points: Live recordings, particularly rapturous crowd reactions, and the best known stuff. Gertcha still raises a smile, as do Rabbit and Got My Beer In The Sideboard Here, but some of the more interesting material is melancholic, less fun, such as What A Miserable Saturday Night and The Willer Warbler.
Low point: The fact you’ll find yourself humming these songs for hours or days after a listen.
Any glaring omissions? No
Anything new? See Content.
Cheerful or tearful excuse for release? Cheerful. It’s hard to be anything else when shouting Gertcha!.
