A COLLECTION of wartime memorabilia belonging to a hero pilot who lived in York has been sold at auction for £3,500.
A private bidder from Yorkshire bought the items including photos, medals, documents and the flying helmet and jacket belonging to the late Squadron Leader John Fisher, after they went under the hammer.
The Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington where Mr Fisher had been a member for many years had tried but failed to raise enough to buy the collection.
As reported in The Press, Sqd Ldr Fisher flew special operations in the Second World War, taking spies into enemy territory and dropping supplies for French Resistance fighters. He was also involved in D-Day and the Normandy invasion. His complete collection charting his RAF career was sold on behalf of his daughter, Melanie, who lives in France, by Gilbert Baitson’s in Hull.
