A teenager from York will try to win over the judges on the first show in a new series of the BBC’s The Voice tonight.

Beth McCarthy, 16, from Rawcliffe, gets her chance to try to make the four judges spin their red chairs round and pick her by performing a version of LMFAO’s Sexy And I Know It while playing her guitar in the first round of the TV talent contest.

The show’s new coaching line-up now features Kylie Minogue and Ricky Wilson from the Kaiser Chiefs alongside Will.i.am and Sir Tom Jones.

The teenager, who lives with her parents, Jon, a Clifton dentist, and Debbie, a hygenist, is a former pupil at The Mount School and is currently on a two-year course at Access to Music, a music college in The Groves.

Beth said she remembers nothing of her actual performance, because she was concentrating on doing a good job.

She said: “It was a bit surreal meeting the four massive stars especially Sir Tom Jones. I felt like when I was standing in front of him he was like a doll of himself, he just didn’t seem real.

“There was a lot of waiting around and then when I came to sing, I can’t remember the audition, it’s just a blank.

“I think I was just that nervous and when you are doing it you are trying to just do it right.”

Beth said she had been writing her own songs and gigging around York as well as busking in the city centre since she was 13, with her dad on hand to help.

She said: “My dad is great, he drives me around to all my gigs no matter where they are. He is literally my roadie.

“I have busked quite a bit in St Helen’s Square outside Betty’s and in Parliament Street next to the fountain.

“I have sung in the basement bar at City Screen, at The Duchess, The Old Star Inn and The Black Swan.

“It’s my dream to be a singer song-writer. I decided when I started gigging that this is what I’m going to do. I’m going to work as hard as I can and The Voice was another way of achieving that.”

The Voice is on BBC 1 tonight at 7pm.
