IS COUN James Alexander intent on destroying all of York’s heritage and history?
We may now lose the old Reynards garage in Piccadilly which was once the home Airspeed Limited.
Historical? Yes, but also an eyesore at the moment. It could be turned into a visitor attraction, but the council prefers another hotel. Haven’t we got enough of those already?
The main reason would seem to be more revenue for the council. Are the councillors going to consider any objections and reservations to this possible plan? Or will be all decided and blow the opinions of the residents who might prefer to keep history alive in York?
As a city for visitors, York used to be most attractive. But it is gradually becoming a hotel city. Maybe fresh ideas from a new council would be a good idea.
S McClaren, Boroughbridge Road, York.
• THE city has been debating the future of the former Reynard’s Garage/Airspeed factory /trolleybus depot/Megazone for at least 15 years.
There have been many ideas, including location for new council HQ, relocated Arc Light Centre, a coach park, 12 homes, shops and more recently as an air museum.
In 2000, the site was to be cleared for housing and the chairman of the trustees of the Yorkshire Air Museum, Derek Reed, said the site’s developers should consider installing a plaque.
John Shannon, chairman of York Civic Trust at the time, agreed, saying the trust could arrange for any such plaque to be made and put up.
Whatever the future use, I agree and think this would be a fitting tribute.
Coun James Alexander, Labour Leader of City of York Council.
