SO England lost the Ashes and the series 5-0 to a much better Australian team. England were outplayed in all divisions; batting, bowling, fielding and wicket keeper/batsmen.
I feel senior members of the team let the youngsters down by not leading by example.
There are some good players in the squad, capable of rebuilding an Ashes winning team, most notable Ben Stokes, who showed that he can play under pressure.
I was disgusted with Graeme Swann, who announced his retirement between the third and fourth tests.
In my opinion, this was disrespectful not only to his friend and captain, Alistair Cook, and all the rest of the touring team, but also to the memories of two of England’s all-time greatest bowlers, Harold Larwood and Hedley Verity, who didn’t have the privilege to announce their retirements.
They both played for England when Don Bradman was at his most ruthless and brilliant best in the 1930s, the greatest batsman the world has ever seen.
Harold, who spearheaded the bodyline attack under the instructions of the architect and captain Douglas Jardine, never played again after the 1932/33 tour. Hedley gave his life for king and country during the Second World War.
This would be my greatest all time England team: J Hobbs, L Hutton, P May, W Hammond, D Compton, I Botham, A Knott, H Verity, S Barnes, F Trueman and H Larwood.
Would any reader care to select a stronger team?
